Annual Dr Salim Ali Birth Anniversary Waterfowl Census and Species Count
Born on 12 November 1896 in Bombay, British India, Dr Ali was the first Indian to conduct systematic bird surveys across India. He was awarded by the Government of India with Padma Bhushan and then Padma Vibhushan, and served in the Rajya Sabha. He was also the first non-British citizen to be awarded with the Gold Medal by the British Ornithologists' Union. He is regarded as the 'Birdman of India' He died on 20 June 1987, aged 90.
To celebrate his life and his work, Chandigarh Bird Club has been holding the Waterfowl Census and Species Count in Chandigarh ISCR since 2017. Over the years, volunteers from the club have counted waterfowl in the water bodies in the most important and sensitive areas in and around Chandigarh. What began with Sukhna Lake, has now expanded to Dhanas Lake, Motemajra, and Ghaggar River.
